I know by this point, most of you have seen the youtube video, Sex. Marriage. Fairytales.//Spoken Word, and if not then you should. There is a line that sinks deeper and deeper into my heart each time he says it. “love doesn’t sustain the promise, the promise sustains the love”. How incredible is that sentence??? We go through life believing that all we need is love, but as most of you betrothed, you know that marriage is a total rollercoaster of emotion. But that sentence, “love doesn’t sustain the promise, the promise sustains the love”, it brings a comfort to my discomfort. I find myself asking the forbidden question, the one we are all so affraid to admit that we have at some point asked, “is love enough to save our marriage?”. And in this one line, I find the answer so blatant. Of course it isn’t. It never has been, but in this world of fictional fairytales, we hold our idea of love to a standard that it absolutely can not meet.
Love. An idea. An emotion. Something we use as comfort. Something we use to show affection and emotion. But as a glue? We have replaced The Holy Spirit in our lives with a simple word. Love. God is our union. God is our foundation. Not love. Love is our friendship, our ability to comfort one another. God is our marriage. The Holy Spirit is our glue.
